TWD: Rugelach

This has been a challenging day today. Not foodwise, but lifewise. Over the summer a new person moved into our quiet neighborhood. A group of neighbors now believes that the residence has become a drug house, and evidence is mounting to support that belief, so we're all working with police to see what can be done. On top of that, and tomorrow's election, I found out that my jury duty is scheduled for tomorrow (or Tuesday if you're reading this then). I was prepared to go on Wednesday, but not on Tuesday. I have a standing meeting nearly every Tuesday, so I've had to call a bunch of people and explain why I won't be there. Plus, it's election day, an historic one at that. It's just frustrating.

So, this week's TWD event was chosen by Grace of
Piggy's Cooking Journal. We made rugelach, a filled and rolled cream cheese pastry. I've made rugelach before, so I was looking forward to trying a different recipe. These are good, but somehow I feel they are lacking something in flavor and taste, which just adds to my frustration for the day. They weren't very difficult: the dough was easy to work with, the filling was fine, they baked without burning, and they tasted alright. Just not memorable. Maybe it was the filling. I'll have to find my previous recipe and compare.

I spread the dough with some boysenberry jam:

Sprinkled on the chopped pecans and currants:

Sprinkled on the finely chopped, bittersweet chocolate:

Ready to eat:

They were good, mind you; just not great. That in itself is a challenge, of course: to find the perfect rugelach recipe now.

I'm sure the other TWD bakers have their own opinions on this week's challenge, so I encourage you to take a look.

I hope things work out in your neighborhood - that's a difficult situation indeed. I love how your rugelach turned out, but hopefully you nail the filling to your liking next time.

Sorry that you are having difficulties.

I hope that something can be done about your neighbors.

Sorry you're having such a bad time with everything.

I actually liked this dough, but my friend gave me a recipe that contains sour cream as well. I'll have to find it and we'll do a side by side comparison!

I hope your neighborhood situation resolves soon. A few years back there was a drug house on my parent's street and it took a while to get shut down.

Oh, honey, I hope everything turns out ok. Neighbour problems are especially hard because you can't get away from them.
Be kind to yourself. Have a chilled bottle of wine and an appointment for a pedicure at the ready for when the jury duty is over.
Cheers.

I think they look great! I'm a fellow TWD baker, and I was thinking that it would be nice if we all could chip in and get Laurie some small token/gift for all the work she does. Would you be willing to contribute? If I can get enough people, it would only be about $1 per person. No pressure :-) Let me know! bethberg12@yahoo.com

It has arrived! This morning I found a package on my doorstep, and it was from you!!!!
Thank you so much for my parcel of goodies, and the pups thank you too. At least they will - they have to wait for the photo, like everyone else. I will post probably tomorrow.
Cheers,
Natashya

They look really good. When you get hold of your other recipe, would you mind posting it please. It's nice to compare.Sorry to hear about the neighbor problems - we had some in our co-op - it took a while but in the end we did get them out.

I'm sorry you didn't love them -- I thought they were the best rugelach I've ever had. (I used apple jelly, but I'm thinking cherry would have been even better.)
